AREA WATERFALLS
While vacationing in the Northwoods or even some local folks might have a few members in their family that are not really boaters or don’t enjoy fishing. Well, that’s not a bad thing and there are many other things to do and see in the Northwoods. One outdoor activity that I believe many would enjoy is viewing waterfalls. There is something about the sound of water flowing over rocks that has a certain calming effect, then there are others that you can feel the amazing power of the falls.
The waterfalls posted here are surrounded by unspoiled nature, breathtaking views and deserving of family photos.
If you would like to take a day trip to see some of these waterfalls, here are a few I would suggest. If you are in the MERCER area, there is LAKE OF THE FALLS. These are only 10 feet but are beautiful and picture opportunities abound. (Take 51 north from MERCER 1.4 miles and turn left on Hwy FF. After 5.2 miles turn left at Iron County Park/lake of the falls sign and you are there.
Another Fall near MERCER is SHAY’S DAM FALLS. These are 15 feet. North out of Mercer turn east on County J (just north of main street) 2.5 miles and turn left on to Beaver Lodge Circle. Go 3.6 miles (passing beaver lake road) turn right on Fisher Lake Road. Go 1.2 miles and turn left on a small side road and watch for the SHAY’S DAM sign.
Then there are two nice falls near HURLEY. 10-foot KIMBALL FALLS, Take US 2 out of Hurley for 3 miles and turn left on Park Road and continue .2 miles and turn right on Park Road. Then cross the one lane bridge to enter the park and you are there. Also, don’t pass up 18-foot INTERSTATE FALLS. US 2 west of Hurley for 0.6 miles to gravel rd. You will see the INTERSTATE FALL SIGN.
Not far from LAND O LAKES, and depending on who you talk to, these might be the best waterfalls in the Northwoods. These are called BOND FALLS. At the intersection of B and 45, turn left onto 45 and continue 17.5 miles and turn right on BOND FALLS ROAD, go 3.5 miles to parking lot and there is a short easy walk to the falls. If you feel adventurist, walk to the top of these falls and you won’t be disappointed.
