CISCO CHAIN FISHING REPORT 5/28/26
There is a NEW LIMIT ON WALLEYE for WISCONSIN- MICHIGAN BOUNDARY WATERS (Cisco Chain). Even though in the Wisconsin DNR 2026-2027 hook and line fishing regulation book (page 76) states the daily limit for walleye is 5 over 15 inches, their website says only 3 walleyes over 15 inches can be kept on (Mamie, West Bay & Big Lake) the Cisco Chain of lakes. But the limit of walleyes on the Chain for MICHIGAN LAKES is still 5 over 15 inches.
Depending on location, water temperatures have been fluctuating between 69 to 72 degrees.
WALLEYE – GOOD. With the warmer weather the water temperatures are in the low 70s, walleyes are mostly being found 5 to 7 feet and mostly in vegetation. Like last week, start shallow and work out to deeper water. Jigs tipped with a FATHEAD minnow is still the bait that’s working best, but some anglers prefer WALLEYE SUCKERS. Don’t overlook wood in 6 to 8 feet. DO NOT forget the evening bite in shallower weeds and shorelines, as they will come up to feed. But remember, this evening bite is short (maybe 45 minutes). WALLEYE SUCKERS and FATHEAD MINNOWS is still the go-to bait.
PERCH – GOOD. The perch bite is getting better, and 4-foot (green) vegetation has been the spot. Crawler and crappie minnows are working well.
CRAPPIE – GOOD. Has anyone else noticed crappie has taken over as the panfish population instead of perch now? Shoreline weeds 3 to 5 feet is still the most productive. And crappie minnows and/or crawlers is the bait to use.
BLUEGILL – FAIR to GOOD. The bite is getting better, but like last week report, size matters and they have been small.
SM MOUTH – GOOD. With the water warming shallow beds are being seen and males have been aggressively guarding nest. If you’re a Bass angler, you will be happy that the number of Smallies being caught has truly picked up. Soft plastics are working but try whatever works for you.
Lg. BASS – FAIR. I have heard a few nice sizes has been caught by anglers fishing for Sm Mouth on soft plastics.
MUSKY – FAIR/GOOD. Some 30 to 35 inchers and a couple of over 40 inches have been landed this past week. It seems spawning may still be going on, because one of the largest one boated last week was swimming with another. I find that really strange, but I guess the water temps just reached 70 degrees.
NORTHERN PIKE – GOOD. Northern Pike are being caught everywhere. Most Northern that have been caught in weeds but moved a little deeper. ALL bait, live and artificial have been productive.
PLEASE RELEASE WALLEYES OVER 24 INCHES. THESE BIG GIRLS PRODUCE MORE EGGS AND LARGER WALLEYES IN THE FUTURE.
