Last week we had friends from out of town up for the weekend and asked about hearing gun fire. They have been to the Northwoods before, but always in early summer so at first thought it was clay shooting at Gateway Lodge, but they were too far from town. Being from let’s say a populated area south of Wisconsin I understood their concern but told them the gun fire was either coming from a gun range or someone hunting.

Folks that live here, hear guns being fired and really don’t give it much thought, so for people that do not live here or near a gun range and hear shooting, here is the hunting season dates until January.

BEAR 9/12 over bait. 9/16 to 10/6 dogs and bait. 10/7 to 10/13 dogs only.
WATERFOWL youth 9/19 to 9/20
NORTHERN DUCK 9/26 to 11/24
OPEN WATER DUCK 9/1 to 12/15
NORTHERN GOOSE ZONE 9/16 to 12/16
TURKEY 9/12 to Jan. 3rd, 2027
COYOTE year round, but trapping is 10/17 to 2/15/2027
FOX (red & gray) 10/17 to 2/15/2027
BOBCAT (period 1) 10/17 to 12/25 (period 2) 12/26 to 1/31
RACCOON hunting & trapping 10/17 to 2/15 2027

So, if you are visiting the Northwoods and hear gun fire don’t be concerned, especially during the hunting dates above.
