CISCO CHAIN FISHING REPORT 5/21/26
There is a NEW LIMIT ON WALLEYE for WISCONSIN- MICHIGAN BOUNDARY WATERS (Cisco Chain). Even though in the Wisconsin DNR 2026-2027 hook and line fishing regulation book (page 76) states the daily limit for walleye is 5 over 15 inches, their website says only 3 walleyes over 15 inches can be kept on (Mamie, West Bay & Big Lake) the Cisco Chain of lakes. But the limit of walleyes on the Chain for MICHIGAN LAKES is still 5 over 15 inches.
Depending on location, water temperatures have been fluctuating between 55 to 60 degrees.
WALLEYE – I will say FAIR to GOOD. With water temperature fluctuating between 55 to 60 degrees, walleyes are being caught in cover, but fishing structure has slowed. (WATCH FOR THIS WEEKS FISHING ARTICAL COVER vs STRUCTURE). Walleyes are being found mostly in cover now. When fishing vegetation, position your boat in 8 to 10 feet of water and cast shallow (4 feet) using jigs tipped with a FATHEAD minnow under a float. If not getting hits, start moving deeper a foot at a time. Anglers have been catching walleye in mid-depth (6 to 8 feet) wood also. Rocks/gravel isn’t producing many fish yet, but with the water temps rising this spot should not be overlooked in the future. DO NOT forget the evening bite in shallower weeds and shorelines, as they will come up to feed. But remember, this evening bite is short (maybe 45 minutes). WALLEYE SUCKERS and FATHEAD MINNOWS is still the go-to bait.
PERCH – GETTING BETTER. The perch bite is starting to come on, and 4 to 6 feet new weeds seems to be the norm. Crawler and crappie minnows are working well. (Anglers fishing for perch also have been boating some walleye).
CRAPPIE – GOOD. Spawning should start soon, but cold fronts could push this timing back a week or two. Of all panfish, crappies have the mast being caught. Shoreline weeds 3 to 5 feet have been the most productive. And crappie minnows and/or crawlers is the bait to use.
BLUEGILL – FAIR. Same as last week, not many are being caught and the ones that are, have been small.
SM MOUTH – Sorry zilch. But with the water being 55 to 60 degrees, they will be the next spawners.
Lg. BASS – I have nothing to report. Well, I heard 1 good size has been caught. Suprise.
MUSKY – I haven’t heard anything on musky.
NORTHERN PIKE – GOOD. Northern Pike are being caught everywhere. Walleye and panfish anglers are ALL hooking Northerns from snakes to over 20 inches. This fish has been chasing all bait, live and artificial.
PLEASE RELEASE WALLEYES OVER 24 INCHES. THESE BIG GIRLS PRODUCE MORE EGGS AND LARGER WALLEYES IN THE FUTURE.
